Acupuncture: What is it?

Acupuncture, simply stated, is a health science which is used to successfully treat  both pain and dysfunction of the body.

Acupuncture originated in China over 2,500 years ago and is now practiced throughout Asia and Europe. It is currently being used more and more in America as we begin to recognize the health benefits & effectiveness of acupuncture through scientific research and studies.

Acupuncture itself involves the insertion of fine, pre-sterilized disposable needles into very precise points on the body which stimulates and activates the body's self-healing mechanisms. In other words, acupuncture encourages the body to heal naturally and to improve its functioning.

Oriental medicine views the body and mind as a unique and integrated system. Rather than looking at a series of separate symptoms, an acupuncturist takes into consideration the whole person. This means that the acupuncturist can address the root cause of pain or illness, especially in chronic cases.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Classical Chinese theory states that energy or Qi runs through the body and along its surface in regular patterns called channels or meridians. These channels nourish and regulate the entire body. When the energy flows freely in these channels, health is maintained. When the energy is blocked or depleted, pain or illness results.

Needling acupuncture points can release blocked energy and regulate areas of deficiency. It helps correct internal imbalances in the body.

According to modern science, research suggests that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release certain chemicals in the brain, spinal cord and muscles. These chemicals either change the perception of pain or stimulate the release of other chemicals and hormones which affect the body’s internal system.

These effects produced by acupuncture enhance and activate the body’s ability to heal itself, promoting physical and mental health.

Are There Any Side Effects?

One of the great advantages of acupuncture is that it has virtually no negative side effects. As the energy in the body is adjusted and the natural chemicals and hormones are released, healing begins to take place.

During an acupuncture treatment, you may feel a deep, dull pressure or surging sensation after the needle has been placed. This is called a Qi sensation (pronounced "chee"). With certain points, this indicates that the correct point has been located and that the body’s energy has been reached.

Most patients feel very relaxed during and after an acupuncture treatment. You may also notice changes in your sleep patterns, digestion, menstrual cycle and emotional attitude. These are all normal and positive side benefits of treatment.

Acupuncture is successful in treating many difficult & painful conditions. It is also exceptional for reducing stress and tension, the cause of many emotional and physical complaints.
